Epsom Salt
Epsom Salt has many uses. I have found some wonderful articles and sites regarding Epsom Salt. Epsom Salt has magnesium in it. That is the key ingredient for us in why we use it for the autism symptoms. Magnesium calms. So many times autistic kids get over stimulated and out of sorts. Meltdowns occur when they can’t process input coming in, or an event that is upsetting to them. Also lack of communication skills triggers meltdowns. By giving the kids a bath and having them soak in Epsom Salt, it has a calming effect on them.
Maybe you’ve usedĀ EpsomĀ Salt before to soak tired and aching feet? I use it to soak my elbow from the pain of tennis elbow.
I put 2 cups of Epsom Salt in the bath water and have the kids soak in it. It’s ideal to do it once daily, though I have one child who does not like bathing, so I have him soak when it’s possible.
I also have them soak when they are in meltdown mode, when I can. Sometimes that doesn’t always work. You may not be able to get them in the tub, you are not home to do it, whatever the case may be. But when we are able to, I have noticed it helping with the meltdown episode.
